EMF’s: What They Are, How They Effect Your Health, and How to Protect Yourself
Not all energy, waves, particles and frequencies that are constantly bombarding us are good for us! Today, we live in the age of a constant storm of nonionizing Electromagnetic Fields and Frequencies. While some Electromagnetic Frequencies (EMFs) may be beneficial to us, such as the EMFs of the Sun, others simply are not and in fact are harmful.
“Electromagnetic fields (EMF) of all frequencies represent one of the most common and fastest growing environmental influences, about which anxiety and speculation are spreading. All populations are now exposed to varying degrees of EMF, and the levels will continue to increase as technology advances. Electromagnetic radiation has been around since the birth of the universe; light is its most familiar form. Electric and magnetic fields are part of the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation which extends from static electric and magnetic fields, through radiofrequency and infrared radiation, to X-rays.”(1)
Today, it is almost impossible to escape exposure to harmful nonionizing electromagnetic frequencies, waves, fields and radiation. Just holding a cell phone exposes you! It was believed that nonionizing radiation exposure was not harmful but this has been proven to be false, and this type of radiation actually damages our DNA. (2) Nonionizing radiation is produced by many things such as smart appliances, cell phones, wireless devices, cordless phones and so many more. Nonionizing radiation, for example, from wireless devices has been show to cause biological damage by creating carbonyl free radicals, which in turn damage nuclear DNA, cell membranes, proteins, mitochondria and stem cells. (2) Rapid advances have been made in the past decades studying the presence as well as the harmful effects of EMFs on our cells and body systems. Much has been published and more is being identified with each passing day. You may access emf-portal.org where you will find a data base of over 30,000 studies related to EMFs, and this number is growing all of the time. A majority of the science today on EMFs has been done around cell phones.
What are the Top Sources of Harmful EMFs and Dirty Electricity in Your Home and Environment?(2) (3) (4)
- Microwave Ovens
- Wi-Fi Routers
- Cell Phones
- Lap Top Computers
- Tablets
- Smart Appliances (washers, dryers, etc)
- Cordless Phones
- Blue Tooth Devices (airpods, wireless keyboards, printers, baby monitors, fitness trackers, speakers, gaming consoles, hearing aids, headphones, and more)
- Home central heating systems
- Central lighting control units
- Battery Chargers for Cell Phones
- Multi-speed fans
- Blenders and mixers
- Solar power installations
- Televisions
- Music entertainment systems
- Energy-efficient light bulbs
- Light dimmer switches
- Hair dryers
- Electric blankets
- Electric shavers
- and more
The most frequent means of exposure today to EMFs is by use of cell phones/smartphones. There are over 5.22 billion smartphone users in the world, representing 66% of the global population. The population of users grew by 93 million in 2020 with an annual growth rate of 1.8%. As for mobile subscriptions, the number has exceeded six billion while the number of new smartphones used daily is more than one million.
“According to the World Bank, 99.9% of Americans have mobile network coverage. If you have a cell phone signal, even when your not using the phone, and even if you don’t have a cell phone, you are actually being exposed to radiation. When you use your phone and hold it close to your body, you are being exposed to radiation even more.” (2)
Recent studies show that RF-EMFs emitted by cellular phones are absorbed into the brain, to a degree, that can affect neuronal activity. In addition, the thermal effects of RF-EMFs suggest the possibility of affecting neuronal activity by temperature generated by mobile phones. (5) “The IARC has classified RF-EMFs as a possibly carcinogenic to humans and warms of the danger of EMF exposure. Moreover, it has been hypothesized that a variety of neurological effects may occur as a result of RF-EMF exposure due to the proximity of the cranial nervous system and the location where the cellular phone is predominantly used. These neurological abnormalities include headache , changes in sleep habits, and changes in EEG. In addition, significant statistical results have been reported by various epidemiological studies on neurological cognitive disorders such as headache, tremor, dizziness, memory loss, loss of concentration, and sleep disturbance due to RF-EMF.” (5)
